Ewa Juszkiewicz

Ewa Juszkiewicz, born in 1984, works in the fields of painting, drawing, installation and animation. She obtained a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, Poland. She works predominantly in the field of portrait, analysing the canons of picturing women, as well as their cultural and social implications, and creating hybrid characters by means of appropriation and remixing of historical artworks. Using deconstruction and referencing, she establishes a dialogue with the painting tradition on the grounds of which she builds new contexts, narrations and formal solutions. She lives and works in Warsaw.

In 2013 she was awarded the Grand Prix of the 41th Polish Painting Biennial “Bielska Jesień”. In 2014 she was selected to 100 Painters of Tomorrow, a book published by Thames & Hudson, London, and was invited to participate in the Shit and Die exhibition in Palazzo Cavour, Turin, curated by Maurizio Cattelan. In 2015 she took part in international exhibitions of Polish contemporary art in Kunsthalle Bratislava and in National Museum of China, Beijing, and had a solo show The Descent Beckons with the accompanying book. In 2016 she was selected for the new edition of Vitamin P – Vitamin P3. New Perspectives in Painting, an album published by Phaidon. She participated in a range of shows both in Poland and abroad, notably in MoMA in Warsaw, at Frieze New York, and in a group exhibition of best Polish artists in the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. She also creates curator projects — together with Paulina Ołowska she prepared exhibitions shown in PGS in Sopot and in Foksal Gallery Fundation in Warsaw.
