Tomasz Kozak

Tomasz Kozak (1971) jest absolwentem Wydziału Malarstwa i Filmu Animowanego Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie. Dyplom uzyskał w 1997 roku. Uprawia malarstwo, tworzy filmy animowane (Czarna burleska [1996], Opera Ocalenia [1998], 627 Romans Dżentelmena [2000]) oraz interdyscyplinarne projekty wideo (m.in. Zmurzynienie [2006], Lekcja lucyferyczna [2006], Flash of the New Flesh [2011]). Autor zbioru esejów Wytępić te wszystkie bestie? (40 000 Malarzy, Warszawa 2010). Głównym obszarem zainteresowań Tomasza Kozaka jest film found footage. Ta technika specyficznej rekonstrukcji materiałów znalezionych stanowi część szerszej strategii hermeneutycznej – Krytyki Fantazmatycznej. Krytyka Fantazmatyczna próbuje jednocześnie opisywać i zmieniać mechanizmy, przy pomocy których późno-nowoczesna kultura tworzy wyobrażenia nowoczesności. Jak wskazuje Kozak, opis i zmianę tych wyobrażeń umożliwiają tzw. Obrazy s(t)ymulacyjne. Są to figury zarazem symulujące i stymulujące. Odzwierciedlają one (symulują) istniejący stan rzeczy (tzn. konwencjonalną strukturę wyobrażeń społecznych), a jednocześnie próbują projektować (symulować) możliwość dialektycznego przekształcenia tego stanu. W drugim przypadku symulacja staje się stymulacją, wywołującą zmiany w strukturze imaginariów społecznych. Zdaniem Kozaka, imaginaria te tworzą swoiste „rusztowania”, czyli najbardziej ogólne formy determinujące jednostkowe i kolektywne wyobrażenia o rzeczywistości.

Tomasz Kozak – bio

Tomasz Kozak (b. 1971) graduated of the Department of Painting and Animated Film at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and received his diploma in 1997. Kozak creates animated films (Black Burlesque [1996], Opera of Salvation [1998], 627 Gentleman’s Romance [2000]) and interdisciplinary video projects (including Clouded [2006], Luciferian Lesson [2006], Flash of the New Flesh [2011]). Author of the collection of essays Exterminate All These Beasts? (40,000 Painters, Warsaw 2010). Tomasz Kozak’s main area of interest is found footage film. This technique is part of a broader hermeneutic strategy – Phantasmal Criticism which attempts to simultaneously describe and change the mechanisms by which late-modern culture creates representations of modernity. As Kozak points out, the description and change of these imaginaries is made possible by so-called s(t)ymulative images. These are figures that simultaneously simulate and stimulate. They reflect (simulate) the existing state of affairs (i.e., the conventional structure of social imaginaries), and at the same time try to project (simulate) the possibility of dialectical transformation of this state. In the second case, simulation becomes stimulation, causing changes in the structure of social imaginaries. According to Kozak, these imaginaries form a kind of „scaffolding,” that is, the most general forms that determine individual and collective ideas about reality.
