Turmoil, upheaval, new beginnings – their origins and manifestations are as varied as their consequences. The contemporary artworks brought together for this exhibition (from the Schenkung Sammlung Hoffmann, the Art Collection of the Free State of Saxony, and the Brandenburg State Museum for Contemporary Art), reflect this complexity and address various aspects of these themes. The broad range of works on display portrays the escape from societal expectations and pressures, formulates the possibility of alternative value systems, depicts resistance and its reception, or makes clear the inherent discontinuity of travel and exile. A common thread is the recognition that our lives in the world are malleable and subject to change, forming the basis for leave-taking, movement, turmoil, and upheaval. The fragmentary visions of these themes in the artworks provide food for thought and open new associative dimensions. At the same time, they often refer to specific historical conditions and events.
