Zuzanna Janin

Born in 1961, visual artist, and creator of sculptures, installations, videos, photographs, happenings and performances. She studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and ÉCAV – École Cantonale d’Art du Valais at Sierre. In 2016 she received her doctorate from the Department of New Media at the University of Arts in Poznan. She has taken part in events including the Sydney Biennale 1992, the Istanbul Biennial 1992, Soonsbeek ’93, the Liverpool Biennial 1996, the Łódź Biennale 2010 and the Venice Biennale 2011. The central themes of Janin’s work are space, memory and time, as well as “in-between” states. Her works invite reflection on the arbitrariness of social roles, their fluid boundaries and the place of individual freedom within the workings of state and society.

Solo shows and screenings include Kunstverein Salzburg; Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw; Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw; Kunsthalle Wien Project Space; National Museum, Warsaw; ASAB Bogota and MAM Museu de Arte Moderna Rio de Janeiro. Janin has participated in group shows at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Kunsthalle Bern; Modernamusset, Stockholm; Museum Moderner Kunst, Wien; Jeu de Pomme, Paris; Fundacio Joan Miro, Barcelona; Whitechapel, London; Kunsthalle Wien; the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; the National Museum, Brasilia; and the Haifa Museum of Art. She lives and works in Warsaw.
